Capitol Building
When Nebraska became a state in March of 1867, a struggle raged over the location
of the new state’s capital. At that time, the capitol building, built in 1857-58,
resided in Omaha and was well located for Nebraska’s 1867 population but still north
of the Platte River, which angered those living south of the Platte. Southern forces
launched an initiative to move the capital to their part of the state. And won.
But even though Lincoln is now home to the capitol building, Omaha’s still home to
Capitol Ale.
